Biomass Heating Systems
What Is A Biomass Heating System?
Biomass heating systems are those which use biomass fuel sources.
The most widely known and used are wood pellet heating systems.
These are a fantastic and environmentally friendly way to heat your home since the source of wood pellets is sawdust and cut off lumber from sawmills which has been reclaimed and turned into wood pellets.
There are two reasons why it is such an environmentally friendly option:
- Usable fuel sources are diverted from landfills and used to heat homes.
This reduces the amount of waste in the landfill itself - Burning of wood pellets is carbon neutral.
The only CO2 that is produced is that which the trees would emit as they rot naturally
The History Of Biomass Heating Systems
You may be surprised to learn that biomass heating systems have been widely used since the 1970’s.
This is when an energy crisis occurred that caused the cost of oil and natural gas to spike.
People began to look for alternatives for their homes that was affordable and readily available.
The fuel for biomass heating systems is of uniform quality and has a number of advantages:
- Local production.
Wood pellets are produced locally and do not need to be imported.
This means that they are less expensive and that you are also supporting the economy by purchasing them from nearby suppliers - Pellets are dry and do not degrade over time.
They are also able to provide a lot of power which means that you need fewer deliveries to get the same amount of heating energy for your home
Wood Pellet Stoves And Boilers
Biomass heating systems are available in both pellet stoves and boilers.
These use the same fuel in two different ways to heat your home.
Boilers burn pellets and heat water which is then piped through your home to heat it.
Pellet stoves burn pellets and this provides more direct heat for your home.
Both pellet stoves and boilers are available in automatic and manual feed models.
Automatic models can provide a steady stream of pellets into the heating system whereas manual systems require you to feed the hopper yourself.
