Ground Source Heat Pumps
Ground source heat pumps are one of the most economical ways to heat your home.
Using a series of tubes buried under the ground, natural heat is transferred to your home for use in low-energy heating systems.
This heat is renewed each day by the heat of the sun and since the ground where the heat is being harnessed is several feet underground it tends to be quite consistent regardless of what the air temperature is.
How Does A Heat Pump System Work?
A heat pump system works to keep your home warm in much the same way as a refrigerator keeps your food cold.
They use a tube system filled with liquid that can transfer heat from the ground to your home and this is then used as part of a low-energy heat system such as under floor heating.
There are three types of loop systems that can be used to extract heat from the ground.
In each of these three systems, a closed loop of tubing filled with a mixture of water and antifreeze are moved around with the use of pumps.
The three types of tube positions include:
- Vertical.
These are great for areas where space is limited.
Vertical systems utilize bore holes to position the tubes. - Horizontal.
With a horizontal system, the tubes can be placed in trenches and the water circulates around to pick up the heat in the ground around them. - Coil systems.
These can also be placed in trenches much like a horizontal ground source heat pump system.
Water and refrigerant are moved through the system of tubes and into the heat pump.
This is the mechanism that extracts the heat and transfers it to the heat distribution system.
Most often, this heat distribution system is a low energy system such as under floor heating which in itself is a very effective and efficient way to heat your home.
An Economical Energy Source
It is possible to save a substantial amount of money on the cost of your heating bills.
Even if you need to supplement the heat during cooler weather, you are still able to generate three Euros worth of energy per every Euro used to power the system.
This makes it much more efficient than other heating systems.
As well, the systems are designed to be durable and long lasting.
They can last up to twenty years and require very little routine maintenance.
This means that they are even easier for you to operate than other environmentally friendly heating methods since they require very little in the way of cleaning.
