Attic Insulation

Many people do not give much thought to their
attic spaces or the attic insulation that they are using.
Unfortunately, this can end up costing you a lot of money
during the time that you live in your home.
Attic insulation can be one of the best ways to make your
home energy efficient and lower the cost of your
heating and air conditioning bills.

Why You Need To Think About Retrofitting Your Attic Insulation

If you have never thought about retrofitting your attic insulation
you could be wasting a lot of money on heating and
air conditioning costs.
There are options that you can explore for any home including
adding extra layers of attic insulation or completely replacing
the insulation that is currently occupying that space.

There are a number of projects and initiatives that can help you retrofit
your older home with more efficient attic insulation.
If you do choose to retrofit your home, there are three main types
of insulation that are preferred for use in an attic space.

These insulations can be applied to attics regardless of how pitched the roof is.

They are:

  • Foam spray.
This is a great choice if you have small areas that you need filled.
Instead of attempting to push loose insulation into these areas it can be sprayed in.
The foam hardens and supplies insulating qualities to the areas where it has been applied
  • Batt insulation.
This is the standard insulation which many people are familiar with.
It traps air which provides a barrier to the loss or influx of heat into an attic space.
  • Loose Fill.
This insulation is blown into an area and acts as a barrier to prevent temperature change.
This means that your home will be kept at a constant temperature in spite of any temperature fluctuations outside of the home

Attic insulation is rated depending on the level of thermal resistance that it offers. This is known as an “R” rating.
When determining how resistant an attic is to heat loss or infiltration, the most significant factor is the insulation itself.
If you are retrofitting, you need to find out how much insulation will be added to your attic and what the R rating is.
