Rainwater Harvesting Systems
Why Should We Harvest Rainwater?
You may be surprised to find that only a small portion of our daily water use needs
to be high-quality treated water. For example, in Ireland, less than half of the water
that is used per person on a daily basis is used for drinking or personal hygiene.
Other uses of water include washing cars, flushing toilets and gardening both indoors and out.
However, these water uses do not need to use the same treated water that you need for
personal hygiene or for consumption.
If this is the case, where can you get the water needed to complete these tasks?
Through the harvesting of rainwater, of course!
Methods of Harvesting Rainwater
There are many different methods that you can use to harvest rainwater.
Some are more well-known than others. A good rainwater harvesting system does not need to be overly complicated.
However, a good rainwater harvesting system can give you much more usable water than simply collecting it in a barrel can.
If you are planning on installing a rainwater harvesting system, you should look for a system that has the following components:
Water catchment system- these are often installed on a roof or other elevated area.
They collect rainwater as it falls from the sky.
It may be as simple as a rimmed sheet or other surface that will prevent the rainwater from draining away.
Channel system- this will transport the rainwater that has been collected from the catchment surface to the area where the water will be stored.
Particle filtration systems- these are essential to a good rainwater harvesting system.
They will help filter out the minerals and particles that naturally occur in rainwater so that it can be utilized for a wider range of applications.
Storage system- this is essential to your harvesting system.
You want to ensure that your tank is large enough to meet your needs and to handle the amount of rainfall that your area routinely experiences.
These are now usually buried underground.
Pressure systems and valves- these components will help keep the water pressurized and ensure it has the power to reach areas where it will be utilized.
Piping- these will carry the water to your home so that it can be utilized for your daily water needs.
Why Use Rainwater?
In addition to the fact that you are helping ease the strain on the supply of commercially treated water, you are also going to experience savings because you will be using less of the water you need to pay for.
It can be difficult to calculate what the savings will be since they can vary depending on your area’s average rainfall.
